N5,000 will strengthen the cashless policy – CBN official

The Director, Corporate Communications Affairs of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Ugochukwu Okoroafor has affirmed that the apex bank’s decision to introduce the N5,000 note is to strengthen the cashless policy of the bank.

He further explained that the Project Cure which is the review of the nation’s currency announced by the CBN last week, is in-line with the CBN’s statutory policy of reviewing the nation’s currency. He also stated that the move is in line with global best practices of reviewing nation’s legal tender on a regular basis of every five-eight years.

Mr Okoroafor on our weekly breakfast show, Sunrise, noted that the N1,000 has been in existence in the last seven years. N500 has been around for 11 years, N200 for 12 years and the N100 for 13years, hence the need for this overall review of the currency, which according to him is ‘over-due’.

The corporate affairs manager also argued that it is essential to rejuvenate the currency, “to make it new”, “for an economy that is just coming out a global recession” he said.

However, a chartered accountant, Bala Zaka, countered the CBN’s policy, describing it as ‘irrelevant brilliancy’

Girl Kills Landlord's Daughter Over Bathroom Slippers

it started as a squabble between two ladies. One was the landlord’s daughter, the other a tenant’s little sister. In time, it graduated to a brawl. People, including the landlord, came to separate them. And there was peace – or so the people thought. Just when everyone was just settling down with what he or she was doing, there was a fresh commotion.

The two ladies had gone back at each other. This time viciously. By the time it all ended, one of the ladies lay dead. It was the landlord’s daughter, named Rhoda. It was said that her alleged assailant, the tenant’s little sister named Happiness, stabbed her in the chest. Her dead body is now in a morgue in the Isolo area of Lagos.

Rhoda, a 23-year-old hairdresser and mother of two (she was nursing the last one before her death) was living in her father’s house, at No. 23 Odulaju Street, Sabo, with her children. Her father Oladuyoye Abel is a pastor with Christ Apostolic Church.

Her alleged killer, Happiness, 19, from Nnewi South, Anambra State and a salesgirl at Alaba International Market, Ojo, said she never intended to kill Rhoda. According to her it was Rhoda who wanted to stab her.

Narrating the incident, Happened said she returned from the Lagos International Trade Fair to notice that her bathroom slippers were not at the entrance of her room. She started looking for them and saw Rhoda’s first child of about four years wearing them.

She continued: “I was cautioning the little girl and I didn’t know that her mother was by the well-side. Instead of Rhoda to caution her child, she started asking the little girl why she should wear the slippers of a valueless, worthless, miserable and good-for-nothing girl. She was calling me other unprintable names. It was from then that fight erupted and her father and my brother intervened immediately and separated us. That was about 7.30pm. Her father was angry with her and he asked her if she was the only lady in the compound that every time, she would quarrel with people.”

Happiness said, in annoyance, the old man went inside the house and started throwing out his daughter’s belongings, asking her to “leave the house as he is fed up with her trouble. My brother also cautioned me that this shouldn’t be the reason to fight. I wanted to go inside when she rushed at me from behind and I shouted and drew the attention of people that thought that the fight had ended and I fell on the door of the tenants’ kitchen and she was holding my jugular.

“Her mother was there, I didn’t know how she got a kitchen knife on the floor probably left by a tenant that was cooking and wanted to stab me. I overpowered her and took it from her and it slipped through my finger and I stabbed her. It was later that I heard that it was on the chest that I stabbed her.”

Don Jazzy and I –Tiwa Savage

You do not come across Tiwa Savage in person for the first time and fail to notice the passion and confidence she exudes. This better comes alive when asked to speak about her music career.

It sure does not come as a surprise, as the 32-year-old singer, who does not look any bit her age, kicked off her music career in the UK, touring as a back-up singer for international stars like Mary J. Blige, Sting, George Michael, Kelly Clarkson and the Spice Girls....

Her impressive resume notwithstanding, Savage, who is the only female in the Don Jazzy-led, Marvin Records music label, is quite approachable. Although she says her label mates do not make her feel like a lady in their midst, her inclusion in the team has given rise to speculations of a steamy romance between her and Don Jazzy.

The rumour was further fuelled when the latter, who has never collaborated with any artiste outside of the disbanded Mo Hits Crew’, featured on her single, Without My Heart.

To these allegations, Savage lets out a hearty laugh, saying, “The rumours are false. Don Jazzy and I have always been friends. He helped me out from the beginning, even before Mavin Records. I have always and will always look up to him. He is a great man and I appreciate his talent so much. He also has a really good heart.”

In less than two years since she moved back to Nigeria, the slender singer has won a large following for herself and has gradually wormed her way to the enviable position as a top musician in the country. Yet, she rules out ‘luck factor.’

“A lot of people see it as a short period but I can assure you I have been working for many years to get here. It is a journey that has spanned many years and three continents just to get here. I am grateful to God that I now have the opportunity to sing but it has been a lot of hard work.”

Savage’s dress sense and appearance have made her nothing short of a sex symbol in the industry. Notwithstanding, she confesses that she was initially not comfortable with her skin colour.

“I used to have such a complex about being dark skinned and was told that I was not beautiful and sometimes when someone complimented me, they would say, ‘You look good for a dark-skinned girl’ but eventually when I moved to the U.S., people started to really compliment me. So I guess the secret is appreciating how God created you. Once you feel good on the inside it will show on the outside.”

According to the Berkley College of Music, UK graduate, she is not threatened by the crop of female artistes trying to break through in the competitive Nigerian music scene. For her, there is no challenge what so ever.

“If anything we even need more female musicians. There are not enough of us. I am actually in awe of many of them: Omawumi, Waje, Asa, Eva are all doing great things in music. Many powerful women have paved the way for someone like me and the truth is there are amazing female artistes that are relentless in their efforts to build the female presence in the music industry. We are working so hard to make sure we close the gap in such a male dominated industry.”

With less than six singles to her credit, her yet-to-be- released album has become one of the most anticipated in the industry. She reveals that it will be a blown-away.

“The album will be out very soon and apart from my usual style, I am experimenting with some different sounds too. I think listeners will be pleasantly surprised. I was happy that O Ma Ga was well received because it was a departure from my typical style. I am not necessarily pushing for an international collaboration right now as I feel when the time is right it will happen. I would love to do a collaboration with Brandy though; she is my all-time favourite.”

With some celebrities constantly striving to live up to the expectations of the public and fans, Savage says she is never compelled to bow to pressure. “From the beginning, I have always just allowed the music to speak for itself and I strongly believe that as long as you are true to yourself, you maintain your integrity and continue to stay humble and create great music, you will be free to enjoy the journey and use your gift to bless people as supposed to always feeling pressured. The only pressure I feel is to always do better.”

When asked what she considers the greatest misconception being held about her, she says, “Probably that I am some kind of diva. In reality I am most comfortable wearing a T-shirt and some leggings. I’m not even a big fan of heels.”

Nigeria's US Visa Applications Increase By 11% In 2012

The number of applications by Nigerians applying to go to the United States America (USA) for various reasons this year alone has risen to almost 40,000, signifying an 11 per cent increase from 2011. This development has made Nigeria a priority country for the US alongside Brazil and China.

The Consular Officer of the US Embassy in Abuja, Ms. Patty Neary, made this disclosure in Abuja yesterday at the monthly briefing of the US mission where she added that approximately 75 per cent of the visa applications are for tourist visas while the remaining 25 per cent are a combination of student, business and official visas.

She advised applicants to plan ahead for their trips to accommodate the current six-month wait time for visa interviews by applicants. Neary disclosed that the embassy in Abuja currently has only three consular staff but hat she is expecting more to join them soon, a move which would ensure the reduction of the six month wait time.

“We have had some interns join us temporarily during the summer to work on the back log of applications; we are expecting at least two more people soon. But we also work on some Saturdays,” she disclosed.

“The embassy allows for emergency appointments in some instances such as medical reasons, but the applicant must first secure a regular appointment,” she added.

According to her, “Student visas are given priorities, but they have to prepare ahead. Now they can apply 120 days before they have to be in school and they must have done all the paperwork and paid the service fee. During interviews, we do not want to hear them talk about the school, but tell us why they choose the school instead,” Neary advised.

She called on the public to join hands with the embassy to eliminate the activities of touts by making their applications themselves.

Fielding questions from newsmen, the Information Officer of the US Mission, Ms. Debra MacLean, said the consideration of a five-year visa policy for Nigerians instead of the current two-year policy is a designation of the government of the two countries.

She added that it would be determined by the host country (Nigeria) and would also be an issue of reciprocity in visa issuance.

Ignore Boko Haram’s Threat, JTF Advises

The Joint Task Force (JTF) in Borno State, “Operation Restore Order,” Wednesday advised the people of the state to ignore the threat by members of the Boko Haram sect that they should desist from divulging information of their hideouts. The JTF said it was a sign of panic and that it was getting closer to arresting the insecurity situation in the state.

A release signed by its spokesman, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, read: “The attention of the JTF Operation Restore Order has been drawn to leaflets and posters printed by Boko Haram terrorists threatening and warning people not to pass information to the JTF on their hideouts, modus operandi and any other information about their activities.

“In the publication, the terrorists warned the public not to divulge any information to security agents or criticise their dastardly activities as doing so will attract maximum punishment from them.”

Musa said: “The task force wishes to inform law-abiding members of the public to totally disregard such publication and consider it as part of the terrorists’ propaganda strategy to keep the civil populace in captivity and perpetual fear with a view to unleashing more terror on innocent citizens.”

He said the JTF was determined to ensure the maintenance of law, order and safety of lives and property of all law-abiding citizens in the state.

He reminded the people of the state that security is a collective responsibility rooted in information sharing and collaboration, urging members of the public in possession of the said publication to disregard or destroyed it. Musa also reminded them that the JTF hot lines are still active and that information can be passed to security agencies through them.

Similarly, the security outfit warned members of the public against donating money to the sect, warning that any donor to the group under any disguise would equally be treated as terrorist.

The JTF lamented that the successes recorded in the interception of some arms and ammunition from the sect has been made nonsense of as some traders in the town have continued to give money for replenishment with the claim that they were threatened.

The JTF however warned individuals or group to desist from “such unpatriotic acts as both the giver and receiver of such monies would be treated as terrorists and be seriously dealt with.”

Embrace Zero-Tolerance For Corruption, AIG Tells Policemen

Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 5, Mr. Hashimu Salihu, on Wednesday warned policemen against bribery and corruption.

Salihu, who addressed officers at the Bayelsa State Police Command Headquarters, Yenagoa, said the authorities would no longer condone corruption.

He said the police would not claim to be fighting corruption while harbouring officers with corrupt tendencies, insisting those indicted for corruption would be shown their way out of the force.

Salihu, who toured police formations in Yenagoa, maintained that policemen must obey the law. He said no officer should hide under the challenges facing the force to extort money from members of the public. Salihu said policemen were expected to be effective by utilising resources at their disposal.

He said, “The current regime cannot tolerate corruption. We cannot continue to fight corruption with corrupt tendencies.” The AIG urged officers to stop demanding “mobilisation fees” from complainants before investigating any case.

He also warned against illegal detention, saying policemen found wanting would be dealth with. The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kingsley Omire, said the challenges facing the command included a dearth of manpower.

He said there were less than seven officers in some stations, adding that the population of female were higher than their male counterparts in some stations.

He commended the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, for deploying three gunboats in the state, and Governor Seriake Dickson for enhancing policing in the state through a special police force codenamed, Operation Doo Akpo.

Save Debbie Latest: Treatment Already Started, Still Needs Money

The latest coming from the camp of Idiagbonya Osarere Deborah better known as Debbie, who is suffering from breast cancer, is that she has started her treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

A source confirmed to Nigeriafilms.com that Debbie has started treatment with the 'Chemo-Therapy' at the hospital. We learnt that the chemo treatment would precede the main surgical operation to remove the cancer.

Enjoy it: You just celebrated your birthday, how old are you? We added a year this August but we promise to tell you our age on our wedding day. Why did you choose to celebrate in Lagos instead of Enugu where you reside?

We already had plans to be in Lagos for the preparation of our new movie, which would come out soon. We decided to celebrate our birthday in Lagos to enable our fans here partake from what others in the east have been enjoying. You released another blockbuster movie, The Light and The Eyes recently, what were the challenges you encountered during the production? Most drivers do plan with others to rob their passengers, so it is imperative for transport companies to carry out thorough research before employing their drivers.

It is advisable for them to know their drivers background. Though, we didn’t encounter many challenges except the usual mosquito bites in the bush. You featured Iyabo Ojo in the movie, what is your relationship with her? She is our very good friend not just a colleague. She is our sister from another mother. We usually pray to God with the names of our cast before producing a movie and if God says you are the one, we don’t doubt Him.

If you watch the movie you will discover that she gave us the best, you will see her in a character that’s well interpreted. And everybody is attesting to it. How much does it take to shoot a movie? It depends on the script you are working on and the cast involved or the kind of camera you want to use. Honestly, you can’t place a particular figure on a movie until after production. How many movies have you produced so far? We have produced more than 18 movies including Onoja, Personal Desire, Desperate Soul, Jealous Friend, Revenge of the Gods, Compulsory Risk, Ujuaku the Tigress, Sister’s Face,

The Eye and The Light, National Experience and National Service among others. Right now, we are preparing to release our new movie, National Experience and National Service. I remember during my youth service, it was very obvious that most corpers didn’t get to the place of their primary assignment while some didn’t do what they were asked to do; rather they indulged in prostitution and other vices such as robbery, kidnapping and cyber-crime. I actually served in Ibadan and the primary purpose of National Youth Service is to inculcate discipline in the youth by instilling in them a culture of industry, patriotism and loyalty.

But I discovered that just few of the corpers followed the principles of the NYSC. Secondly, we found out that the bad habits displayed by the youth emanated from the homes. Some parents don’t care about their children rather they devote more time to wealth creation. They don’t care to know what their children do behind their back, either in school or during the NYSC. Who wrote the examination including those expensive handsets and clothes their children bring back home? This attitude has to be corrected and that is why we’ve decided to shoot a movie on it so that parents would dissuade their children from such ungodly acts.

Which movie are you working on now? It is an epic movie, which we intend to shoot in the East but we would not give you the working title now until it is released. Though, it is an olden day story, it is a true life story. How soon would you release National Experience? The movie will be released any moment from now.

We don’t have a specific date because we leave God to direct us. The movie featured notable stars like Mama G, Iyabo Ojo, Abraham Nwodo, Chidinma and Chidiebere, and Ijeoma Chukwura among others. It was shot in Enugu. Which movie would you say gave you financial breakthrough? “The path of the just is like a shining light that shines more, more”. We cannot say that our yesterday is better than our today but each time we released a movie, it makes waves and we realize profits. For instance, The Eye and The Light is really making waves in the market.

In fact, if it not profitable we would have stopped producing movies but God has been so merciful and we give him the glory. You are young and aspiring ladies, how were you able to have a breakthrough against all odds. It is by the grace of God. He said that He is the father of the fatherless. The earth is of the Lord and the fullness thereof so whatever we want we go to Him in prayer. Secondly, when He gives you a vision, He backs it up with a testimony.

If it’s not His vision, it would not work. So, we are a step away from our destiny. Our prayer everyday is for God to lead us in the right path without mistakes. When did you lose your father and what are the things you missed most about him? We lost our father in 1998. Since then, we’ve missed all his fatherly love. But I miss all his disciplinarian actions. I remember whenever he saw us hanging around downstairs (we lived upstairs) he would cane us so badly. He always takes us out to catch fun as well as do some shopping.

In fact, my father imbibed in us the culture of wearing a uniform dress and we have grown with it. How many are you in the family? My father had three wives. In all, we are 10 children, six boys and four girls in the family. But from my mother side, we are two boys and three girls. The first wife has two boys while the third wife had two boys and a girl, though she is late. We love ourselves, there is nothing like envy or jealousy in the family. My elder brother is a movie marketer in Aba.

When our father died, some people were scared that the family would separate. Though, people tried, it didn’t work because the bond our late father built in us lives forever. What is your relationship with the governor of Enugu State? We are daughters from Enugu State and we appreciate our governor’s fatherly care.

He is like a father to us and he appreciates our level of intelligence and hard work. Once you have such virtue, you would be able to gain his closeness and you also learn from him because he despises laziness with a passion. We must confess that he is a very good man. In the movie, Sister’s Face, you played twins sisters who deceived and played on their husbands’ intelligence by sleeping with each one of them. So, have you in real life cheated on your boyfriends? No, we have not done such. It is just a movie, so they are different from us.

We cannot share our men. In fact, we will guard them jealously. If I am dating a guy and he later tells me that he wants to date my sister, no matter the kind of love we share, it dies that minute because we don’t do it. For the movie you referred to, we got embarrassed by a woman at the market who called Chidinma a very wicked girl for sleeping with her sister’s husband. In fact, it took people’s intervention to convince the woman that it was just a movie.

Would you make love to a man as twins? No! God forbid. Our man is our separate property that we cannot share. Are you in any relationship? Most of our friends are guys instead of girls because they have business ideas. Concerning if we have boyfriends? No! We don’t have boyfriends, if we have, you would have seen them at our birthday cutting the cake with us. Right now, we are not in any relationship but we have special friends.

How do you handle your male admirers? Whenever any man admires us because of our movies, we accept them as platonic friends, friends without intimacy. Are you saying suitors are not coming? They are coming; we would not lie to you. We don’t want to eat any man’s money after praying and getting confirmation from God that he’s not the will of God for our lives. You don’t have to get married because your friends are getting married.

You will live to regret it for the rest of your life. Once you make such mistake, it is forever. Our mother didn’t marry our father and then divorced him so why would we leave our husbands after marriage? If eventually we get married and we are told that our husbands are having an affair with other women, it would bother us because they have given us the certificates of marriage. But if he is traveling, we will give him condoms for safety. Whatever he is doing outside would not be our business though it is not easy, it the surest way to guide a marriage with an unfaithful husband. You don’t expect him to change to your desired man in a second; you have to work it out.

This is why some of our colleagues in the industry are having crashed marriages. When they are getting married, they will tell you he is the nicest man, and tomorrow he has become a devil. Why don’t you make your homework? Don’t you think you may lose your husband to another woman? We pray for a man with consent to conquer our fears because there is no way he would hurt us, and above all, a man with the fear of God. You are so close to each other; does it mean you don’t quarrel? We hate quarreling with people but we cannot do without quarreling among us. In fact, we were quarreling before you came and immediately you leave, we would continue from where we stopped. And we also argue a lot though we settle our differences immediately to enable us discuss present issues.

We settle our differences rather than wait for someone to settle it for us, not even our mother settle our differences. You always wear same clothes do you also wear the same under wears? Yes! You can have a look at our under wears for proof after all you are a woman like us (laughter). When we go shopping, we also buy same pants. In fact, we collectively choose the clothes and under wears we wear for the day. You hardly feature in movies produced by others, are you facing difficulties in getting roles from other producers? No, we believe that God assigns every role we get; we don’t go after roles instead we are contented with the ones we get and it is the reason why we don’t have any problem with any artiste like the way others do.

What is your message to young ladies who are aspiring for greatness in life? They should always believe in themselves. You don’t need to sell your body to be achievers or get the good things of life. We have elastic brains, you can start a business with little amount of money and God will direct you to your destiny. Prostitution is not good, you are not supposed to be selling your body, it is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Although, sometimes we do sin against God because we are not married but selling your body is not worth it. Ladies should not be carried away by the kind of clothes their friends wear or cars they ride, all fingers are not equal. Just live a life that is worthy of emulation.

3 past winners return as Gatekeepers!

As Season 9 of Gulder Ultimate Search (GUS) reality television show gets set to commence any moment from now, all eyes are on the ultimate prize running into millions of naira, and a brand new SUV. Since 2004, Gulder Ultimate Search has continued to captivate audiences worldwide as contestants engage themselves in a battle of brains and brawn.

The tasks are indeed grueling, strength draining and mind-boggling, and in the end, victory always wipes away the tears and sweats shed in the remarkable journey of the jungle. For the past few seasons, N7.5 million and a brand new SUV had been at stake. But this year, the stakes are higher and so is the prize money, which is N9 million, including a brand new SUV and N500, 000 swagger allowance. There is also the bragging right of being referred to as an “Ultimate Champion” and subsequent induction into the Gulder Ultimate Search “Hall of Fame.”

Ever since the very first edition was held on the Snake Islands, off the Atlantic Ocean coast of Lagos State in 2004, subsequent editions have been staged in different forests across Nigeria. The answer remains shrouded in secrecy.

This year, the hallowed jungle awaits brave and daring young men and women, courageous enough to attempt to unearth the long lost fortune, hidden centuries ago by a wise Gatekeeper – a true hero of old. The jungle is not kind to the contestants. This is not an adventure for the faint-hearted or lily-livered. Not having kids doesn’t bother me –Tee-A

For Tunde Adewale, who most people know as TEE-A, comedy is a passion. Right from secondary school, he had been a comedian. When he graduated into cracking jokes every last Friday of the month at Ali Baba and Lagbaja’s shows, it was still for the fun of it. Today, the rookie of yesterday has grown into a full-fledged professional who lives on comedy. In a chat with The Entertainer, TEE-A opens up on his journey to fame and fortune. Enjoy:


Going into comedy

Basically, it was not as if I thought of it as a career, no, that never happened. What we did was just working, it never occurred to me that I will have an office, I will have assistants, people that are booking me for shows, all that was never on my mind, all that was on my mind was ‘let’s just get an opportunity to perform’, and I can also speak the same for Ali Baba. It was not for the money, it was just about ‘let’s entertain’. A lot of people knew me when I was performing for Lagabja and Ali Baba. We were not doing it for money. It was just a ritual that before the last Friday of the month, I must have a joke, I must have a material and that was the fun of it. And then, once you go there, you do it, business comes and people will say ‘Ali, we can’t afford you, can we use Tee-A?’ and Ali will say ‘Tee A go and do it’, it was just about business and when it was getting big like you need someone to help you draw invoice, do letters, it was not like a gamble, it was being focus on work.



Tales by Moonlight

The funny thing about me is that it has really never crossed my mind to work elsewhere. All I have done revolved around entertainment. Right from the time I finished secondary school, before I gained admission into the university, I was already doing Tales By Moonlight. I remember when Wale Adenuga came to recruit some of us from the Theatre Arts department for his production. We were the first set of cast for Papa Ajasco & Company, so we had already known that that was the direction we were heading.



Discovering my passion

Did I even discover my passion? I just got used to those feelings. I used to mimic lecturers in school. When we were in secondary school, there was no teacher I could not mimic, and everybody will just laugh. The same thing followed me to the university. It is just natural for me to want to entertain, to look at things and look at the funny side of it.



Parental opposition

My mother will just say as long as it does not affect your education you can go ahead. I started quite early, when it was time for riddles and jokes, I was the person they used to push forward. I remember my English teacher, Mrs Oto will say ‘this boy is just a clown’, she will ask me to do something and I will just do something else, everybody will just be laughing. When everything is dry they will just say ‘Tee-A, go and pick the microphone’. I remember from JSS 3, comedy has been a part and parcel of me. Even if by tomorrow I say I don’t want to entertain any more, that I want to be a pastor, I can’t still kill the humour side of me.



Why I studied Theatre Arts

I was admitted to University of Lagos to study African and Asian Studies, and I also gained admission into University of Ibadan to study Theatre Arts, it was Diploma in Theatre Arts, and it was my experience in UI that really inspired me. I wasn’t there for long; it was just for the period of the auditioning and the training. The school had a registration process then, the student would go to the department to register and then apply, if you were selected, you would then go for the audition. So, when I was going for my audition, they had some senior students, who were helping some new students with their audition tests. One of the most brilliant students in the school then was a young and pretty lady called Bimbo Akintola.

I met her and started calling her mummy and aunty. I would ask her that ‘aunty, come and help me with this and that’. Thankfully, she liked me and told me she would help me. That was how Bimbo took charge of preparing me for the exams, she taught me a lot of things, helped me in many ways especially with my auditions. Of course, she was a brilliant actress and singer and also very popular on campus. My experience after I passed was that I would help someone from the way I was helped. I had to come back to UNILAG, that was how Bimbo and I became very good friends, till tomorrow. If I see her now she would say ‘’ah my son, come here’’, that’s the sort of close relationship we have and share.



Theatre 15

I was in the Theatre 15 at the time in UNILAG. It was when my set was leaving that the school created the Department of Creative Arts. Theatre 15 had a lot of students at the time; there were students from Architecture, Engineering and all sorts. Uncle Tunji Bamishigbin was a member, also Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi; so many prominent people were members of that group. When I started in school, Princess was there, Koffi too, these people are much known today and that gives me joy.

One day, we went for a show in Benin, Ali Baba and Trybesmen and I, the show was in UNIBEN, that’s was where we met Basket Mouth for the first time, he was just a student there and today look at him. AY too was there, I remember he would come to Lagos to book Ali Baba for shows. My joy now is that what we started then is now paying off and has produced so many young and great people. That on its own is an inspiration.



My TV show

It is not as if we are making so much more money from the show, it’s just another platform, not everybody gets to see you at events, nobody gets to see you do stand-up and you have to reach out to everyone so it’s like broadening your horizon. We have quite a number of fans, just expanding the horizon to reach out to more fans, that is what the TV show is all about. It has its own fan base and they follow us even when we do events.

We stopped the show to rebrand and repackage, you have to keep re-inventing yourself, I don’t believe in being stuck to one thing that I have done. I have done TV, I have done radio; there is always something to do at every point in time. A talented person should find various ways to express his talent other than sticking to one format.

But thank God for his mercies, the new show has gone far above my expectations, the show is a year and a couple of months old and landmark achievement has been made within that limited time. The feedback we get from fans and viewers has been very encouraging. The show has also been very constructive, though, we get some criticisms and encouragement here and there, we try to take everything and come out with a better production, which is what we have done with the season three.



Going to Ghana

The reception in Ghana has been very encouraging. Prior to this time, I could go anywhere in Accra and do anything I like but on this last trip, I couldn’t go anywhere without one or two people recognizing me. They were like ‘I think I know this face, you appear on television’ so it shows that people are watching.



On Tyme out Lounge

Nothing really went wrong; it was just some little issues here and there, which we thought we were going to sort out by moving to a bigger and more spacious venue. We changed our focus and decided to focus on the TV show instead. When we do get what we are looking for, we will get back to it; the whole template is still in existence. I don’t settle for less, if I don’t get what I am looking for, I don’t venture into it. Another major issue is that we are no longer looking at renting, if we are going to acquire it, it has to be the kind of property that we want and in the area we want.



Strengths and weaknesses

I am still making money because I know my strengths and weaknesses. I thank God that every week or every weekend there will be an event to handle. Maybe what you meant is that there is low patronage in comedy, the credit crunch and fuel subsidy will affect everybody but what will judge is the purchasing power. But, I have been surviving, there have been one or two things we have been able to do in terms of events, there are clients who have remained faithful to us, there are clients who have stuck with us, who we have been working with for years, so I can’t complain.



Between Tunde and Tee-A

Do I even strike a balance between Tunde and Tee A? Tee A is a workaholic, Tunde on the other hand is a quiet person, who will rather love to stay with his family, watch movies, and cook something at home. Tee A is the side that likes the red-carpet events; there are two different entities, when one is not available the other one takes charge.



On being comedian and MC

Funny enough, what I have heard is a different variation – MC/comedian, not a comedian or MC, that is what I have heard. If you need an MC who is also funny, if you need a comedian who can also MC so I have been called a MC/comedian. I think it is humbling to have been seen as someone who can match those two functions together. There are times when people will call you for events and tell you ‘please, anchor this event, it is a serious event so we don’t want jokes’ and some will say ‘just do comedy’, and sometimes when you anchor events some people will ask why is he not cracking jokes, is he not funny again? Without knowing that it’s the brief you got to make it a straightforward event. I think it is a thing of honour to be seen as someone who can combine both effectively.



Comedy challenge

The major challenge which no one takes time to understand is the fact that you might not be in the mood to crack jokes. That is one pressure that entertainers particularly comedians and MCs face. There are times that you are not just in the right frame of mind; there are days that your mood has gone from bad to worse. On the other hand, the client doesn’t care about that because you have been paid to do that job, so that’s one of the major pressures entertainers and comedians face because they are actually human beings.

There was a particular event that I had having lost a very close friend of mine in the morning; we rushed him to the hospital and he died before we got to the hospital. I was the one driving the car and he was the one behind me. We drove to the hospital where he was pronounced ‘dead-on-arrival’. From the hospital we took him to the mortuary, I had an event that evening, and I still went ahead to perform. We were taught in the theatre that no matter what happens, the show must go on. That is a real pressure because it could be personal or even more than personal, so much could be happening but the show must go on.



Jolly good fellow

I am just a jolly good fellow. I am very flexible, I blend into so many backgrounds, and it’s just the grace to be flexible. I am really very flexible and I think over the years that is one thing that has really worked for me.



Comfort

Some of the people I went to school with are bank managers; I just look at them and laugh. I would say ‘look at this Mufu that couldn’t talk when we were in school’, so if you have stayed 16 years in an industry, you are entitled to some level of comfort.

If I have dedicated 16 years of my life to one industry, I deserve some level of comfort, which includes roof over my head, shoes on my feet, and clothes on my body. It can be better but I am grateful for everything that I have.



Marriage and responsibility

Marriage has added a lot to my life. Before I got married, I could afford to be cheeky, I could afford to say anything but now there is a form of responsibility I shoulder. As a married man, I have learnt a lot and have grown so I show maturity in my entertainment, in my performances, and even in my personality.

One thing that marriage has taught me is accommodation. You should be able to accommodate all manner of people in different circumstances. My wife is a very accommodating person; I think I learnt that from her. There is nothing anyone can do to me that would do so much damage to my being because I understand that we are all humans and are bound to make mistakes. I don’t keep issues in my heart, my heart is free and clear, I am an easy going, lucky fellow and there is nobody I can’t talk to. I will tell you my mind right there and that is the end of it. My heart is very big because I don’t harbour certain thoughts.

On having kids

Initially, it was a choice not have a baby at a certain point because that time that we got married, my wife wanted to do her Master’s programme abroad which involved her traveling back and forth, so we decided that for that period, we should calm down and put child birth on a hold. After that phase ended, we decided to start trying and we are still trying. No, not having kids doesn’t bother me.

The Bible says: “in His time, He makes all things beautiful”. It is human to want to think about it but when you remember the promises of God, as human beings we will keep working on it day and night. Me impregnate a lady? No, there is no room for such a thing. I am very comfortable and happy with the person I am with and that is my wife, kids will come at God’s own time.



My future

For me, the future holds great promises. I follow the Bible especially as it concerns this issue. It says: “the glory of the latter days shall be greater than that of the former”. I believe its talking about me there, I believe it’s my portion, no matter what I did in the past, no matter what you think I am doing now, I believe the future will definitely be bigger than everything I have done in times past. I attend The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) headquarters. I am Bishop Okonkwo’s boy.

MTN Project Fame 5: 15 contestants enter The Academy

After auditions in 10 major cities in West Africa, the 18 finalists sang their hearts out lastweekend to convince the judges to give them a ticket into the highly coveted 15 spaces in the Project Fame academy.Ade Bantu was introduced as a new member of the panel of judges.
Monica, winner of Project Fame season 4 opened the show with her singles Tomorrow and Below.
Present at the newly built Ultima Studios, Lekki were Larry Annette, C.M.O MTN Nigeria, General Manager, Consumer Marketing MTN Nigeria, Kola Oyeyemi and other senior Executives of MTN Nigeria.
Each contestant came out one after the other determined to sing their way into the Academy, as they displayed their very best in all of their performances. Christian Adeyefa began the contest with Craig David’s all time song Unbelievable, followed by Grace Mark who sang Always Love You by Whitney Houston; Sonia Obi did Natural Woman by Aretha Franklyn.
Daniel from Sierra Leone, Roland from Ilorin and Anthony from Lagos bowed out of Project Fame season 5 stage leaving the race to the other 15 contestants who for the next 10 weeks will face the faculty in the academy, battling their way to fame and fortune.

Police kill four kidnappers in gun duel

Four suspected members of a five-man kidnapping gang were killed over the weekend by the police in Delta State during a gun battle at the kidnappers’ hideout in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The hoodlums last Wednesday at about 7.30pm kidnapped a director in the Delta State Civil Service, Mr. Benson Ojoto, while driving an official Toyota Hilux vehicle with registration number DT 14 AA 18 into his residence on Ezenie Avenue, Asaba.

Mr. Ojoto however escaped from his captors who drove the vehicle to an unknown destination.

But acting on a tip-off, officials of the ‘Operation Storm’ attached to the Delta State Police Command, trailed the bandits to their hideout in Benin City, Edo State capital where the four suspects were killed during exchange of fire.

The official vehicle, one AK 50 rifle, four live ammunition, one locally made revolver pistol, two cartridges, one military jacket were recovered from the kidnappers’ hide-out. Also recovered at the scene of the exchange of gunfire were Volvo and Toyota cars, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Charles Muka who confirmed the incident. DSP Muka said the police have spread out their dragnets to track down the fifth member of the gang who escaped with bullet wounds during the gun duel.

We Will Reduce Corruption In Police By 80 Percent – IG

The Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Mohammad Abubakar, on Thursday in Minna pledged to reduce corruption in the police force by 80 per cent 

Abubakar, who made the pledge during a stakeholders meeting, said his resolve to reduce corruption in the police force, was aimed at making it responsive to the needs and aspirations of Nigerians.

He said the removal of policemen from road blocks across the country was part of the strategy of reducing corrupt practices associated with the police, adding that the mounting of road blocks gave the force a bad name.

The IG said that with the removal of policemen from the roads, attention would now be focused on stamping out corrupt practices and corrupt officers from the various stations across the country.

Abubakar insisted that bail was free for all bailable offences, adding: “even a woman can bail any person from the police in accordance with the laws of our land.’’

He directed police officers not to handle land matters but to refer aggrieved persons to the court, saying that the court was the competent body recognised by law to handle land matters.

“We can only mediate among two parties for peaceful resolutions of crises arising from land matters as conflict managers,’’ he said.

The IG also directed police formations not to handle issues relating to marriage and collection of debts from aggrieved individuals, adding that complainants should be directed to the court.

He solicited for the support and collaboration of the stakeholders to enhance effective policing by providing necessary information and logistics for the force.

The Chairman, Police Community Relations in the state, Malam Abdullahi Abdul, commended the police for safeguarding the lives and property of the people of the state. (NAN)

Police Kill Four Armed Robbers In Lagos

Police on Friday morning killed four armed robbers in Ilasamaja area of Lagos.

The robbers, whose number could not be ascertained, reportedly invaded one of the streets in the area at about 2am and threw the residents into pandemonium.

The residents made frantic calls to policemen at Ilasamaja division of the state police command, who stormed the area and engaged the robbers in a gun duel.

Four of the bandits fell to the superior firepower of the policemen, while the remaining members of the gang escaped with gunshot wounds.

The leader of the police patrol team, CSP O.A Ochogwu, reported that the robbers invaded Salako Street in the early hours of Friday.

"At about 2am on Friday morning we received telephone calls from Salako Street that a group of armed robbers had entered one of the houses in the street. After the calls came, we gathered the patrol team and stormed the area.

"When the bandits saw the police patrol vehicle, they opened fire and our men responded immediately. Four of them were eventually killed, while the rest fled with gunshot wounds.

"This is not the first time that armed bandits will be operating in the area. The last time they came, they were up to 15."

Ochogwu, however, condemned the lack of effective communication between the police and residents of Ilasamaja.

"The residents of the area are not forthcoming when it comes to providing information to the police. They don’t give information, thus I will say they are not proactive. This time around, they called us because they came under the robbers’ attack. That was a reactive measure.

"The armed robbers are not spirits, they lived among the people. The residents should cooperate with the police by providing information on suspicious movements and characters in the area," he advised.

Businessman Accuses Police Of Unlawful Detention, Harassment

Former Group Managing Director, Quintessentially Nigeria, Okon Iyanam, has accused the Nigeria Police of unlawful detention and harassment.

PUNCH Metro had reported on August 10, 2012, that the Police Headquarters Annex, Obalende, Lagos, had quizzed Iyanam over a N50m fraud allegedly perpetrated by him when he was GMD of the company.

The firm, headed by Mr. Festus Odimegwu, had written a petition to the IG, shortly after Iyanam resigned from the company.

Iyanam alleged that it was at the behest of Odimegwu that policemen harassed and detained him for over 48 hours.

In a petition written by Iyanam’s lawyer, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, and addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Abubakar, he expressed disappointment that the police allowed themselves to be used as tools to harass and intimidate an innocent person.

He also dismissed the allegations by the company as baseless and a smear campaign.

Iyanam claimed that the company was aggrieved because its franchise was about to be revoked by its parent company in London.

He said, “On August 5, 2012, one Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Ben Okolo, with armed policemen, stormed Iyanam’s residence in Lekki to effect arrest allegedly acting on the IG’s order. They also claimed to have a search warrant that entitled them to search Iyanam’s house.

“However, Iyanam was out of town but spoke to Mr. Okolo and promised to come to the Police Headquarters Annex, Lagos.

“On getting there on August 7, my client and I appeared before the police but we were informed that he was under arrest based on a petition from Odimegwu who had made allegations of fraud among other things against my client.

“At this point, Okolo said my client would be transported to Abuja at 3pm and that a flight had been booked. My client was not allowed to prepare for the trip but was forced in ‘Gestapo’ fashion under armed guard to embark on the trip to Abuja.

“When my client arrived in Abuja at 9pm, he was immediately taken to the Police Headquarters where he was forced to write a statement that he completed at 12am. Thereafter, he was transferred to Area 10 Police Headquarters where he was detained for 48 hours. My client, who has a medical history, was denied access to his family, doctor, drugs and was also refused bail.”

Kazeem said Iyanam was later granted bail on stiff conditions.

Efforts to get the spokesman for Nigeria Police Force, Mr. Frank Mba, to comment proved abortive as calls made to his telephone rang out while a text message sent to him was not replied.

3 Lecturers In Court Over Varsity Sex Scandal

Principal actors in the sex scandal that rocked Edo State-owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma in July 2010, involving a lecturer of the institution, Dr. Peter Otubu and a female student, Judith Ivie Okosun have been charged before Magistrate Margaret Iluobe of Ekpoma magistrate court.

Those charged before the court, Samson Ogbeide, Igbudu Samuel and Ojeabulu Eghosa Clement, all lecturers of AAU, and Judith Ivie Okosun, Juliet Obehi Okosun, Esther Ogbeide and Aruya Ohis William are standing trial on a seven-count charge of alleged stealing, threat to kill, unlawful detention and publication, false statement and assault punishable under the criminal procedure law.

Dr. Otubu, a Catholic Knight of Saint Mulumba (KSM), was publicly stripped in the residence of Judith, a 400-level engineering student on July 17 while allegedly attempting to have sex with her in exchange for a pass mark in her course.

Following this, authorities of AAU slammed an indefinite suspension on the lecturer for allegedly taking undue advantage of Judith. She was also suspended by the University which accused her of violating its matriculation oath.

In addition, Judith was detained for two days by the police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) while acting on the petition of the lecturer who accused the female student of kidnapping him.

When hearing in the criminal case preferred against three lecturers and four others began on Wednesday at the Ekpoma Magistrate Court, the accused persons were said to have conspired amongst themselves to commit felony with intent to steal and demand the sum of N500,000 from Engr. (Dr.) Peter Otubu with threat to kill or lynch him if he failed to comply, which made him to issue a cheque of N100,000 in faovur of one Judith Ivie Okosun; and offence punishable under sections 516, 406, 390(a) of the criminal code. at which the 2nd prosecution witness (PW2), Aruna Abdulwahab testified before Magistrate Margaret Iluobe (Mrs.) of his ordeal in the case.

The accused persons were also alleged to have unlawfully detained Engr. (Dr.) Peter Otubu in the apartment of Judith Ivie Okosun against his will, as well recording and publishing the recorded video clips of the plaintiff (Engr. (Dr) Peter Otubu) on the internet with intent to injure him and exposed him to hatred; an offence punishable under sections 365, 573, 375, 126, 125(a), 355 of the criminal code.

Leading the prosecution, Assistant Legal Director, State Counsel, Anthony Okungbowa Esq and O.P. Ehigiamusoe (Mrs.) told the court it was ready with its witnesses and was prepared to go on. A.U. Osunde Esq and O. Enahoro represented the accused persons.

Testifying, PW2 (Aruna Abdulwahab) a 500 level Accounting student of AAU told the court that on 17th July 2010, he received a phone call from his fiancé urging him to come home.

On getting home, Abdulwahab said he met his fiancé in the next compound with people gathered around the apartment of the 1st accused person (Judith Ivie Okosun).

He explained that he saw the plaintiff (Engr. (Dr.) Otubu) stripped in Judith’s apartment, as she dragged him within her room and made calls across to people to come that the plaintiff was in her possession.

Cynthia Was Hardworking, Decent - Best Friend

Cynthia Osokogu, the 24-year-old girl who was allegedly murderered by her BBM friends in FESTAC, Lagos, has been described by her best friend, Aishatu Ella, as hardworking


In a comment posted on the internet, Ella said Cynthia was not a wayward youth as some members of the public tried to paint her on social media and in some publications.

Her comment read in part, “In the last few days, I have had my heart torn, stripped and broken in pieces first by the disappearance and death of my dearest friend and secondly by the wickedness exhibited by some Nigerians, passing judgment on someone they never knew or met.

“When she was officially declared missing, we put up a number online so people with information can call and help out. Of over 500 calls we received in three days, only two of those calls were from people who actually helped with information. One was my dear friend, Nuhu Kwajafa. The other was the Area Commander, who called to inform us of the arrest of the suspects.

“Others were heartbreaking to say the least. I wondered how her mother would have coped if she had to deal with silliness, pettiness and undeserved hate from strangers, who just took one look at a lady and decided to judge her based on her looks.

“When the sad news of her death broke, I made a comment and said I hope ‘all those who have insisted she was with a man would have their answer now and let her rest in peace’. How wrong I was! They would only go back and manufacture a more hurtful and painful story and pass it around as facts.

“I have no comments for such people; I just want to share with you the real Cynthia we knew and not the one created in the last few days.

The beginning

“Cynthia was born on November 10, 1987 to Gen Frank and Joy – Rita Osokogu. Udoka, as her mother named her, was a uniting factor in her family as a baby. Her mother had three boys before her. She was the last baby and only girl.

“Her parents settled in Jos where we were and still neighbours. We became friends because in those days, there were only few houses in the area.

“At 13 years, she was taller than me. She was of the same height with her brothers; she was a tomboy all the way, determined, stubborn and focused. As she grew, her mum and I playfully suggested she should try modelling because of her structure, Cynthia took it seriously; though her major focus was education, she gave modeling a shot and did quiet well as a model.

“In 2007, she got her first major run way job and I will never forget the day. She called me from Lagos after she had been paid; she said she wouldn’t want to waste the money and would buy clothes and bring to school to sell. The first batch of the clothes never made it to Keffi as industrious Cynthia who stayed with her brother at Airforce Quarters in Lagos, sold the clothes to her brother, his colleagues and their friends. She told me she made three times her capital and immediately re-invested it by buying more stock. She came to Keffi and rented a shop. That was the birth of her baby known as ‘dresscode’.

“I remember I bought her forms to one of the national competitions some years ago, she passed the screening stages and called me one day to say she was asked to compromise to get through the next round. I told her to withdraw and she did. That was in 2011. She never entered any major pageant after that.

“Cynthia was like the baby sister I did not have. She was my confidant, stylist and a great comfort. We shared a lot, tears and smiles. She was always at my service.

“She was greatly involved in charity. Anytime I sent a text or post a picture of someone needing medical support, I could count on Cynthia as one of the first respondents.

“To her mother, Cynthia was her heart. Several times I would ask Cynthia not to go to Jos because of its volatility and she will reply saying, ‘ Mumsy is alone at home’.

“When it was time to serve, Cynthia opted for to crisis-ridden Jos in order to be close to her mother.

“At age 24, Cynthia had a successful business, and was running a post-graduate programme in Public Administration. She earned every kobo she had by hard work.

“The security situation in our country now is horrible; people are kidnapped, robbed and killed every day. Why is it so hard to believe that a young girl was killed while going to pursue her legitimate business?

“Her crime is being, young, pretty and a businesswoman. People should have the decency to let us mourn in peace.”
