Police kill four kidnappers in gun duel



Four suspected members of a five-man kidnapping gang were killed over the weekend by the police in Delta State during a gun battle at the kidnappers’ hideout in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The hoodlums last Wednesday at about 7.30pm kidnapped a director in the Delta State Civil Service, Mr. Benson Ojoto, while driving an official Toyota Hilux vehicle with registration number DT 14 AA 18 into his residence on Ezenie Avenue, Asaba.

Mr. Ojoto however escaped from his captors who drove the vehicle to an unknown destination.

But acting on a tip-off, officials of the ‘Operation Storm’ attached to the Delta State Police Command, trailed the bandits to their hideout in Benin City, Edo State capital where the four suspects were killed during exchange of fire.

The official vehicle, one AK 50 rifle, four live ammunition, one locally made revolver pistol, two cartridges, one military jacket were recovered from the kidnappers’ hide-out. Also recovered at the scene of the exchange of gunfire were Volvo and Toyota cars, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Charles Muka who confirmed the incident. DSP Muka said the police have spread out their dragnets to track down the fifth member of the gang who escaped with bullet wounds during the gun duel.
